About

We want to spotlight the unique and fun activities the library engages in with our student population. At least once a day, Monday through Friday, we pop and hand out fresh popcorn in the library. We host events like "Plant a Study Buddy," where students paint a pot and plant a succulent to take home (that won't die immediately when not watered), "Make Your Own Bookends" where students can be creative and add a personal touch to their dorms and apartments, “Cozy Crafts and Cocoa,” “Library Mini-Golf”, a cereal bar during finals week to get food, coffee, or cocoa into student bellies without them needing to leave the library, and many other events to engage our student population. We celebrate Banned Books Week and give out free books, organize quiz-show style games, and engage in conversations and critical reflection. These activities are not just about having fun, but about fostering a sense of belonging.

When our students drop out or transfer, we usually assume it's about financial need, which can be true. However, what students frequently talk about in surveys and exit interviews is that they never felt they "belonged" at UIS. Belonging can be found in interactions with dorm mates and classmates, going to Homecoming and campus-wide events, or having an extraordinary professor or staff member with whom you establish a relationship. We hope to help promote a sense of belonging in all we do. Whether it is books or audiobooks, activities, or a full belly, the library hopes to help provide for our students what they need most, when they need it the most.

Yes, the library will always provide resources that support the curriculum and research materials that stimulate broader thought. We offer class instruction and student research consultations, and our staff is always finding innovative and fun ways to connect with our students. But more than that, we're committed to creating a trusted space on campus where students can escape the dorm or classroom, connect, relax, study, reflect, and use our technology and resources for a successful academic journey.

We have state and university funds for collection needs, but would argue that we also need things like popcorn, banned books, and mini-golf for which those funding sources aren’t appropriate. These activities remain an integral and essential part of connecting with our students, connecting our students with resources, and connecting our students with each other. Support is crucial in making these activities possible and in creating a sense of community on our campus.
